Learning Pathways

More than a school, The Biome is an ecosystem where classroom leaders, parents, community members and learners all work together to empower students with the tools they need to reach their fullest potential.  Through the use of educational best practices and innovation, The Biome offers a model for integrating individualized learning and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education.  Our model’s three elements create a unique educational experience for each learner.

Parents Describe their Experiences

Rigorous Academics

At The Biome, our learners’ individual gifts, talents, and interests are recognized and valued as tools to increase their love of learning.  Customized education at The Biome is accomplished through two vehicles:

  • Student-Centered Learning through the STEAM Framework:  At The Biome, children learn through hands-on, cross-curricular instruction and practices.  Learning by doing creates learners who are  active participants in their education.  The STEAM integrated learning framework guides our instruction across all disciplines and provides learners with a holistic academic experience by bringing arts into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Inquiry-Based Learning:  The Biome offers a safe environment, encouraging children to take academic risks.  At The Biome, inquiry-based learning is not applied to science alone but to every subject within our STEAM school.  Classroom leaders guide learners through problem based and student-centered learning activities, designed to help them deepen their knowledge and bring personal ideas and concepts to their educational experience.  Through the repetitive process of inquiry, children learn what to ask, conduct investigations and think critically and logically about everything within their expanding worlds.

Experiential Learning

The Biome is a school without walls. We create pop-up micro-schools that utilize existing community assets to support authentic educational experiences for all of our learners. Additionally, our micro-schools extend the number of caring adults dedicated to our learner’s long-term success. Imagine the potential of repurposing communities for the benefit of children.

Through our pop-up micro-schools, learners to delve deep into topics of interest and learn from experts. For one class, learners might attend a nine-week micro-school at the local zoo. A separate class of learners might attend an eight-week micro-school to study entrepreneurship at our regional innovation hub. Learn more about our pop-up micro-schools!

Self-Regulation

At The Biome, our goal is to help children build perseverance and self-regulation.  Social Emotional Learning helps our learners “acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.”  SEL Defined | CASEL – CASEL | Success in School.
